The End of an Era.

In 2010 I attended my very first yoga class. It was held in the employee break room of a small health food store. I set up next to a guy with a big smile. He was a teacher at Penn State University. He also held a chair position in the school of sciences and was basically the head honcho.

I told him that I'd be interested in any openings in their biology department.

A month later I was standing in front of 75 college students. My personal bio intro lecture was ready. But when the class quieted down I was too nervous to begin. Something came over me. I told everyone to close their eyes. That was the first time I led a group through meditation.

Over the next 4 years, I taught Human Bio, General Bio, Human A&P, Mammalian Anatomy, and this one environmental bio lab that was honestly a bit out of my comfort range.

The man with a smile would become my boss, teaching mentor, friend, and patient. He would handle the occasional complaints that were received from students in my class. My lectures were edgy. You've seen the cut of me standing on the desk ranting like a lunatic?

99% of the students loved the class. And my mentor would tell me "If you don't piss someone off you're not doing your job." And there was always 1.

Then one day, my teaching mentor told me that they had filled a position in their department and my services were no longer required

I was crushed

But my chiropractic mentor was relieved. He would always say "Ya know... you lose money when you go down there to teach those kids." And he was right. I was certainly worth more in the office then as a teacher.

I didn't do it for the money though.

But my practice started to grow, because "where attention goes, energy flows."

One year later, the man with a smile called and said "we have a position open, but it's not a 101 course. It's Nutrition 251. This is a big course. You're going to have to tighten up a bit and toe the line."

My heart was in a vice.

Me: "I LOVE teaching but my practice is thriving and I really don't have the ability to leave in the middle of the day. I have to decline"

Smiley: "It's fine. We can make the class at 6:30, you'll have time to make it down. I really want you to teach this class."

Me: "Well that's wonderful. But it's still 20 minutes away, 2 or 3 days a week, my kids are young and I don't thi.."

Smiley: "We'll make it a 3-hour lecture. One class per week. You're the man for the job."

Me: "That's cool, but still... my practice is really taking off and..."

Smiley: "your pay will be doubled."

Me: "that sounds really nice, but I'm not intrinsically motivated by money and I just have to say n...

Smiley: "We're going to give you the biggest lecture hall on campus, the auditorium."

Me: "Wait What?"

And that's when I realized... that I am intrinsically motivated... by an audience.

It makes sense. According to the Enneagram (personality test like Myer's Brigg)... I derive satisfaction and purpose in life by providing value for others.

I took the job. And I bought a skateboard bc I could barely get from the parking lot to the auditorium on time.

And I continued teaching... 1000's upon 1000's of young brains, on the brink of their final neurological maturation, how to...

meditate, breathe, be emotionally intelligent, not be a victim...

and other...

quantum mechanical, mysticism, intuitive, open-minded, self-awareness, intentional, pineal gland anecdotal, stoned ape theory, spirit science, hearth math, Dr. Seuss, psychedelic, esoteric, childbearing, sexual maturity tantra... stuff.

It was wild.

But I never actually gave that personal bio lecture. I never felt compelled to talk about myself. Until one day a student called me out.

"You're not going to introduce yourself??"

(it was a fair accusation, I only ever referred to myself as "Dr.B")

So I gave them a bio

I was going through my separation and eventual divorce then, which of course, wasn't like most marriage break-ups... but that's a story for another time.

Apparently, I triggered someone. They kept notes all semester. Everything that I said that was fringe, radical, in my eyes necessary to stay relevant and interesting, was used against me as ammunition.

There was an investigation. I almost lost the job.

I wrote a 5 page summary of every point brought against me with the intended context. And I tacked on 5 years of student quotes from the semester end surveys.

In short... "Best Class at PSU" (Harrisburg campus)

And I continued teaching

Until now

(corona cutbacks)

and I couldn't be happier with the impact I've had

But NOW we are here
