What is Materialism?

Materialism is the idea that everything in the universe is made of matter — physical stuff.

From Democritus in ancient Greece to modern science, materialists argue that thoughts, feelings, and even consciousness are just products of the body and the brain.

The alternative — dualism or idealism — says mind, spirit, or ideas are primary.

Materialism grounds science, but critics argue it leaves out meaning, value, and lived experience.
