Karnataka's longest-serving Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned on Thursday after the Congress

Karnataka's longest-serving Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned on Thursday after the Congress high command reportedly asked him to step down, bringing an end to months of political speculation over the state's leadership.

Addressing the media shortly after submitting his resignation, the veteran Congress leader said he had always made it clear that he would resign whenever the party leadership asked him to do so.

"I have told you all many times that whenever the high command asks me to resign, I will resign. Two days ago, the high command asked me to step down. Hence, I have resigned," Siddaramaiah said.

The development clears the way for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over as Karnataka's next Chief Minister after a long-running power tussle within the Congress party over the top post.

Sources said the party is also working on a broader leadership formula, including multiple deputy chief ministers, to balance caste and regional equations within the government.

Siddaramaiah, 78, served as Karnataka Chief Minister from 2013 to 2018 and again from 2023 to 2026, becoming one of the most influential leaders in the state's modern political history.
