The Sonic Activist | Gabriel Akon | TEDxYouth@ScotchCollegeAdelaide

A Sonic Activist uses their voice as a vessel for sound energy that explores, understand, inspire and redefines the world around us across space and time. DyspOra takes us on his life journey to show us the power of finding purpose through overcoming adversity while championing a new generation of AustrAliens who want to belong to the society but are often ostracized and left on its fringes. “When I succeed I am Australian, but when I fail I am African" is a recurrent theme throughout the presentation. “It’s about wanting to belong, but still feeling alienated. These AustrAliens are the biggest potential this country could ever have because they can greatly contribute to our communities and could do so effectively. The only investment required is to accept them. Gabriel ‘DyspOra’ Akon is an award-winning Hip-Hop recording Artist, Sonic Activist, Poet and founder of the playback 808 Kingdom. The nomadic troubadour was born in South Sudan and raised across various locations in East Africa until his family migrated to the South Australian city of Adelaide.
After spending his formative years in a Refugee camp in Kenya, DyspOra saw music as a key tool in breaking down cultural, lingual and racial barriers which led him to begin writing poetry at the age of 12 and had graduated to writing rhymes by the time he was in high school. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
