Chladni Plate Demonstration

The Chladni Plate is an elegantly simple apparatus that is fun to work with but which is also important from the educational standpoint. It teaches much about the power of sound to create form from formlessness. Named after German physicist and musician, Ernst Chladni (b. 1756 d. 1827), sometimes known as the 'father of acoustics', it consists of a metal plate (typically brass) centre-held on a support stand. The plate is strewn with sand or salt grains and one of its edges is 'played' with a bow. The friction of the bow hairs against the edge excites the plate at one of its natural resonant frequencies. By bowing the plate at one position, quickly followed by a second position, it is possible to create a large number of geometric patterns, representing analogue mixes of the plate's resonant frequencies.
