Depending on which pattern you adopt, you can use the breath to invoke states of alertness (fight or flight) or states of serenity (rest and digest). A box breath or a 4-7-8 pattern breath will move you into a parasympathetic state, slowing down your heart rate and activating hormones like acetylcholine and oxytocin.
