A Rare EF1 Landspout between Swellendam and Malgas on the 26th September 2022 !
A surprise landspout occurred between Swellendam and Malgas on the 26th September 2022.
The landspout formed at around 15h30 SAST on the farm Springerskuil. It began on the surface, picked up dust and eventually extended upwards joining the storm cloud. It lasted about 15 minutes with a destructive path of approximately 1.8 km long and 280 metres wide.
The landspout damaged some of the crops on the farm, including an irrigation pivot and uprooted trees - a taaibos tree was also uprooted and pushed against a fence.
Similar to a waterspout, relatively cool air passing over hot ground produces updraughts and cumulus clouds. Random swirls caught up in an updraught can form a funnel which becomes visible by raised dust.
