The Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn seen from Fish Hoek (Cape Town) - 21st December 2020

On the 21st December 2020, Jupiter and Saturn appeared the closest in centuries.

The Great Conjunction of the two gas giants was the closest since 1623 (just 14 years after Galileo made his first telescope) and the closest observable since the middle ages in 1226!

I watched with great anticipation after sunset each night from the beginning of December as the two planets edged closer together.

It was remarkable to observe Jupiter and Saturn in the same field of view through the telescope eyepiece for the first time on the 10th December 2020.

The two planets appeared noticeably closer through the eyepiece each night until the Great Conjunction on the 21st December - a spectacular display during the separation of only 0.1 degree at the closest point - just 1/5 of a full moon diameter!

I attempted to create a visual record of the Great Conjunction as seen from Cape Town (including the days leading up to the memorable event) with the use of wide angle photography, time-lapse and live video footage through various telescopes.
