A mother's mission to honor her fallen Marine son through service

A quiet neighborhood park in Port St. Lucie stands as a lasting tribute to a young Marine who made the ultimate sacrifice and a community determined to keep his memory alive.

Ian T. Zook Neighborhood Park, located off Northwest Manville Drive, honors Marine Corporal Ian T. Zook, who was killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom on Oct. 12, 2004. He was 24 years old and just months away from returning home.

For his mother, Karen Zook, the memory of learning her son had died remains vivid.

"And I heard my husband yell my name," Karen Zook recalled. "I thought he was injured. And so I walked out into the living room and I saw behind him were the Marines and the naval officer. And I knew."
