Smarter Every Day Question: Diffraction and the International Space Station

As I was landing during a recent trip, I noticed that diffraction turns the airplane shadow into a circular double (or triple) rainbow at a significant distance. If that's true, then how is it possible to see a detailed silhouette of the International Space Station against the sun, from 240 miles away? Why wouldn't the diffraction from such a distance turn it into an unrecognizable smudge?
