Innovating on the Trailing Edge of Technology: Why Humanitarian Technology Sucks, and How to Fix it

How does Silicon Valley help someone who lost their home in a disaster, or can't read, or lacks drinkable water? The answer is simple: They don't. Each of these people make poor customers, so technology companies do not innovate on their behalf.

These are all Broken Markets, where a third party must pay an overwhelming loss incurred by someone else. Competition drives innovation and decreases prices in functioning markets. But in Broken Markets, competition drastically decreases the amount of money available for beneficiaries and clients, and incentivizes service providers to improve their own competitive advantage rather than increase impact.
The solution is incentivizing collaboration, and innovating using commodities, on the trailing edge of technology, rather than the leading edge. The presentation also suggests 11 possible interim business models that can help create sustainable humanitarian technology.

This is a re-recording of the presentation of the same name given at the January 30, 2020 Silicon Slopes Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.#siliconslopes #humanitarianism #disaster
