Michael Angelo Batio's Guitar Playing Routine
Metal Method instructor Doug Marks interviews Michael Angelo Batio about his daily practice routine. Ever wonder how Michael prepares for a performance? This is it!
The Daily Routine Defined:
Daily Guitar Playing Routine – Encompasses all of the activities listed below. The routine should be focused on accomplishing a goal.
Warmup – a series of hand and finger exercises that prepare us to play near our potential throughout the session.
Learning – acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, study, or being taught. Education necessary for the daily guitar routine ranges from studying music theory to learning how to use music technology.
Practice – perform an activity, exercise, or skill repeatedly in order to improve or maintain proficiency. For this program practice will be synonymous with repetition of short phrases. Repeating songs will be described as rehearsal, not practice.
Composing music – the act of conceiving a piece of music, the art of creating music, or the finished product. Composition is necessarily distinct from improvisation.
Improvisation – the creative activity of immediate ("in the moment") musical composition, which combines performance with communication of emotions and instrumental technique as well as spontaneous response to other musicians.
Memorizing – Memorizing a composition or parts of a composition.
Rehearsal – Playing compositions from beginning to end occasionally stopping to correct problem sections.
Dress rehearsal – Playing all compositions to closely resemble the final production.
The show – a professional performance in front of a live audience or recorded to be viewed by an audience.
