Philadelphia, commonly known as Philly, is a prominent city in the United States. It holds the distinction of being the most populous city in Pennsylvania and the second-most populous city in the Northeast megalopolis and Mid-Atlantic regions, trailing only New York City. Philadelphia, or Philly, boasts a rich historical significance, having served as the nation's capital until the year 1800. According to the 2020 census, it ranks as the nation's sixth-most populous city with a population of 1,603,797.

Founded in 1682 by William Penn, an English Quaker and advocate of religious freedom, Philadelphia played a pivotal role in American history. It served as the capital of the Pennsylvania Colony during the British colonial era and became a central meeting place for the nation's founding fathers. The city hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, witnessed the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War. Additionally, the U.S. Constitution was ratified in Philadelphia in 1787.

Present-day Philadelphia is a hub for higher education, with 18 four-year universities and colleges, making it a leading center for academic research. The metropolitan area boasts a robust economy, ranking as the state's largest and the nation's ninth-largest, with a gross metropolitan product of US$444.1 billion as of 2018. Philadelphia is home to five Fortune 500 corporate headquarters and is considered one of the top U.S. venture capital centers. The city's transportation infrastructure includes the historic Philadelphia Stock Exchange, the third-busiest Amtrak hub in the nation (30th Street Station), Philadelphia International Airport, and the growing PhilaPort seaport.

Known for its cultural richness, Philadelphia hosts numerous outdoor sculptures and murals, making it a national cultural center. Its expansive parks, including Fairmount Park, contribute to its status as one of the world's largest urban parks. Philadelphia's vibrant arts scene, diverse cuisine, and colonial and Revolution-era history attract millions of tourists, contributing significantly to the city's economic impact.

In the realm of sports, Philadelphia is home to five professional sports teams and has gained a reputation as the nation's best city for professional sports fans due to its loyal fan base. The city also boasts an active LGBTQ+ community and has played a significant role in the development of American music, particularly in genres such as R&B, soul, and rock.

Philadelphia stands as a city of many firsts, including the nation's first library, hospital, medical school, national capital, university, stock exchange, zoo, and business school. With 67 National Historic Landmarks, including Independence Hall, the city has been the birthplace or home to numerous influential Americans. Time magazine recognized Philadelphia as one of the world's greatest 100 places in 2021.
