Organic radicals are very reactive molecules with unpaired electrons. In a normal situation, such a molecule will form a bond with another similar or different molecule. But one can stabilize it either by delocalization or by introducing bulky protection, which does not let the reactive center to actually react. In this case, this molecule is called a stable radical, it can be isolated and studied. Such molecules are still not very common, but they have very interesting unusual physical (photophysical, magnetic, etc.) and chemical properties that can be used in synthesis, electronics, medicine, etc.
Diradicals (or biradicals if the unpaired electron centers are disconnected) – have two unpaired electrons on different sides of a molecule, and they are even more unusual, more rare, and therefore more interesting, especially since a lot depends on the type of interaction between the two unpaired electrons. In this video, I briefly review 3 very fresh publications about these molecules: one from China, one from Germany/Poland, and one from Israel.
