Towards molecules with monovalent elements of group 14. 2 papers in a new journal Nature Synthesis.
If you learned chemistry in school, you probably know that carbon and silicon have 4 valence electrons, i.e., they typically make 4 chemical bonds. If you continued to learn chemistry at a more advanced level, you likely heard about stable molecules with these atoms having 3 bonds (radicals), or stable molecules with divalent carbon/silicon - carbenes/silylenes (having 2 bonds). I am sure, however, that no one heard so far about stable molecules with monovalent carbon or silicon atoms. Well, here are the first examples. Or perhaps not really?..
