At a high-stakes summit in Beijing this week, tensions over Taiwan dominated closed-door talks between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi reportedly warned that Taiwan remains the “most important issue” in U.S.–China relations and cautioned that mishandling the situation could lead to “clashes and even conflicts” between the two superpowers. While Trump publicly emphasized trade, stability, and cooperation, China pressed hard against continued U.S. arms sales and military support for Taiwan. Behind the ceremonial handshakes and red-carpet diplomacy, the summit exposed the growing fear that Taiwan has become the single most dangerous flashpoint on Earth, an island whose semiconductor industry now underpins the global economy and whose fate could determine whether the world moves toward stability or a catastrophic new Cold War.
Taiwan may look like a small island off the coast of China, but it quietly controls the technological backbone of the modern world. From smartphones and AI systems to advanced weapons and supercomputers, the most advanced semiconductors on Earth are produced in Taiwan.
The story begins in 1945 after World War II, when China’s civil war forced Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek to retreat across the Taiwan Strait while Mao Zedong established Communist rule on the mainland. What began as a temporary refuge eventually transformed into the center of the global semiconductor industry.
Today Taiwan manufactures more than 90 percent of the world’s most advanced microchips. These chips power nearly every modern industry, making the island one of the most strategically important locations on Earth. If Taiwan were ever invaded or its semiconductor factories shut down, the consequences would ripple across the global economy almost instantly.
