ANNOTATED TEXT: John Denver died when the single-engine light aircraft he was piloting crashed into Monterey Bay in California, killing him instantly. He was 53 years old.
Shortly after takeoff, "it just sort of dropped unexpectedly into the ocean," Pacific Grove police Lt. Carl Miller told The Associated Press at the time.
Denver was flying an experimental fibreglass plane, similar to the one shown here, when he crashed. His body was later retrieved from the water.
During the 1970s, Denver was one the biggest stars in the world, known for such hits as "Rocky Mountain High" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads."
Later in the week thousands of people turned out to pay their last respects to the singer, at the memorial service in Aurora, California.
