How an Integrated Design Approach Benefits K-12 CTE Schools

http://www.lpainc.com/ At McBride High, learning happens everywhere. On the 150,000-square-foot campus, each small learning academy includes dedicated career labs with a direct connection to outdoor learning spaces. This gives students the opportunity to move learning from the classroom onto the campus promenade and to share ideas between each academy.

LPA's integrated design team worked with Long Beach Unified School District to create a campus that provides specialized technologies and amenities for the CTE curriculum, while equipping the school with sustainable features that meet the district's bottom line.

McBride High beats California Title 24 2008 standards by 40 percent, exceeds the current 2030 Challenge benchmark by 75 percent and has qualified to be a Collaborative for High Performance Schools Verified project. In addition, a 277-kiloWatt, rooftop grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system is projected to meet up to 60 percent of the site's estimated energy needs.

Similarly, at South Tahoe High School in Lake Tahoe, Calif. students learn in specialized spaces according to their CTE pathway. Facilities have been designed to enable students to develop, record, and produce their own television programs, theater productions or film projects in both studio and live audience settings.

"Sustainability is Community Development" is the abiding theme. The green skills offered by the CTE programs allow students to stay and raise families with careers that bring value to their community while at the same time demonstrating principles being taught in the classroom that will 'Keep Tahoe Blue' -- promoting a healthier, lasting environment.

The school is a resource for the community and provides it's only Performance Theater. Students will have the opportunity to engage themselves in television and editing skills that allow them to understand the ever-growing world of media and technology for Careers in Local News and Entertainment.

The school is CHPS Designed and qualified for the High Performance Energy Grant exceeding Title-24 by 30%.
