Keelung Gateway Terminal © Asymptote Architecture 2012

Project Description

Asymptote's proposal for the Keelung Gateway Port Terminal's landmark tower and the horizontal port terminal buildings create a vast new canopied public space at water's edge that is sheltered from both the harsh sun and heavy rains typical to the region. On the city side, the architecture provides a distinctive urban presence while framing views through and beneath the terminal buildings to the waters edge and beyond to the city skyline across the inlet. The Terminal's elevated position allows for an efficient flow of vehicular traffic to both upper and lower levels for drop-off and pick-up areas, while enabling a grade-level pedestrian connection and seamless access to the new Gateway Port Terminal public spaces from the city itself. These direct and fluid urban connections also sever to integrate the new Port Terminal into Keelung's recently planned urban park now under development, thereby extending the publics access to the water's edge.
