GAMEOVERSE was 11 years in the making but the original concept goes all the way back to 2009, 17 years! This isn't just RubberRoss' baby, its a whole teenager!

This truly feels like the culmination of all the video game web animations we’ve gotten since the internet’s inception while also being a fun twist on the “save the world” plot where the good guys help the villain of the week while the bad guys help the hero. Think Kingdom Hearts if Sora had to help out the Disney villains while the organization got all buddy buddy with the protags.

While the pacing isn’t perfect and I wish we got to see more of Kaboodle training the villain Snappers, along with Kaboodle’s dynamic with Kit, I had a great time with this pilot! I’m in love with everything else this episode has thrown at us. It seems like some worlds can be themed around certain levels you tend to see in games, like Flappers’ world clearly being based on water levels, but Kit’s outfits that make me feel things imply we could get worlds themed around genres like fighting games and action-adventures, so I can’t wait to see what’s in store there.

And what’s going on with all these destroyed worlds. WHY are they getting deleted? Who’s deleting them? I’m getting some vibes there’s meta commentary on how people can burn through games and forget about them as soon as they beat it, never acknowledging its replay value or going the completionist route

I love that the music is that of a dramatic and gritty AAA narrative when they’re in space but is then typically more upbeat and chiptune when they’re in the game worlds, a feat pulled off thanks to their two composers. And of course the art and animation is AMAZING, everyone involved smoked it. Those end credits are nuts.

I’ll have a full breakdown of the pilot coming real soon so be sure you’re subscribed but for now I’d give it a 4 out of 5. Iron out the wrinkles and it could easily become Glitch’s next breakout show.

And let this pilot be an example of why you should never let your dreams die. You never know when the stars will align to grant your wish and make them come true.
