TITLE: AITA For Canceling My Friend’s Surprise Party After I Found Out What He Said About Me?

..............
The decision that cost me one of my closest friendships started with a conversation I wasn’t supposed to hear.

My friend group had been planning a surprise birthday party for Ryan for weeks.

He’s the kind of guy who loves attention — big reactions, big celebrations, the whole thing. So we went all out. Decorations, cake, guest list… everything.

I was the one organizing most of it.

Booking the place, coordinating people, making sure it would actually stay a surprise.

Three days before the party, I went to Ryan’s apartment to grab something I had left there earlier.

He didn’t know I was coming.

When I walked up to the door, I heard voices inside.

Ryan was talking to someone.

At first I wasn’t paying attention.

But then I heard my name.

So I stopped.

I know I probably shouldn’t have listened… but I did.

Ryan laughed and said, “Yeah, he’s been doing all the work for the party. It’s kind of funny, honestly.”

The other person asked, “You’re not even excited?”

Ryan replied, “Not really. I just don’t want to deal with it, but I’ll show up and act surprised.”

That already felt bad.

But then he added something that hit harder.

“He tries way too hard. It’s kind of embarrassing.”

I just stood there outside the door, staring at the ground.

Because for the past two weeks, I had been putting in real effort to make this something special for him.

And he was laughing about it.

I quietly left without knocking.

That night, I kept replaying what I heard.

Part of me thought maybe I misunderstood.

But deep down… I knew I didn’t.

The next day, I made a decision.

I canceled the party.

I told everyone something came up and we couldn’t do it anymore.

Two days later, Ryan found out.

He called me immediately.

“What happened to the party?” he asked.

I told him the truth.

That I heard what he said.

There was a long pause on the phone.

Then he got defensive.

“You weren’t supposed to hear that,” he said.

That response made everything worse.

Not an apology.

Not even a denial.

Just that I wasn’t supposed to hear it.

Now our friend group is split.

Some people say I overreacted and should’ve just gone through with it.

Others say I had every right to cancel.

But honestly…

I keep wondering if I let one moment ruin years of friendship.

So now I’m asking—

If you found out your friend was mocking you behind your back…

Would you still go through with something special for them?

Or would you walk away like I did?
