TITLE: AITA For Ignoring My Neighbor’s Texts After He Asked Me For A Favor… And Then Finding Out Why He Needed Help?
.................
The most uncomfortable message I received this year came from my neighbor at midnight.

It simply said: “Hey, are you awake? I really need a favor.”

Now normally I’m a pretty helpful person, but the thing is… I barely knew this guy.

His name was Mark, and he had moved into the apartment next to mine about two months earlier. We’d said hello a few times in the hallway, but that was about it.

So when my phone buzzed at midnight with that message, my first thought was: this feels weird.

I didn’t reply.

Five minutes later, another message came through.

“Sorry to bother you this late.”

Still, I didn’t answer.

Honestly, I just didn’t want to get dragged into some late-night problem with someone I barely knew.

So I put my phone on silent and went to sleep.

The next morning when I stepped outside my apartment, the hallway felt strangely quiet.

Then I saw Mark sitting on the floor outside his door.

He looked exhausted.

I asked if everything was okay.

He gave a tired smile and said, “Yeah… things are fine now.”

That’s when I noticed something strange.

There was a small pet carrier next to him.

Inside it was a cat.

A tiny gray kitten.

I must’ve looked confused because Mark quickly explained.

Apparently the kitten had wandered into the hallway late the night before. It was shaking and clearly lost.

Mark doesn’t have a car, and the nearest 24-hour vet clinic is about fifteen minutes away.

He had been trying to find someone in the building who could drive him there.

That’s why he texted me.

But since no one answered, he ended up waiting until morning to walk the kitten to a nearby animal clinic.

Thankfully the kitten was fine.

But standing there in the hallway, hearing the story, I suddenly felt terrible.

Because the message I ignored wasn’t some random late-night request.

It was someone trying to help a small animal.

Mark didn’t seem upset about it.

He just said, “I figured everyone was asleep.”

Still, I can’t stop thinking about it.

Because if I had just replied… it probably would’ve taken ten minutes to help.

Instead he spent the entire night trying to handle it alone.

So now I’m wondering something.

Was it reasonable for me to ignore a midnight message from someone I barely knew…

Or should I have at least answered?
