1965 U.S. NAVY TRAINING FILM "REPLENISHMENT AT SEA" TRANSFER OF MEN & SUPPLIES 21694
The 1965 U.S. Navy training film Replenishment At Sea (MN-10037a) reviews the basic elements for a replenishment operation conducted at sea. The film covers various topics such has formations for the fleet to take during a replenishment operation, the types of equipment and transfer methods used, the different supplies transferred, and how to factor in elements including wind and hull wash. The film opens with shots of aircraft carriers sailing at sea (00:44). A jet is raised on an elevator to the flight deck. There is a shot of a helicopter moving in to land on a carrier from the point of view of the landing wheel of the helicopter (01:30). Men on the supply ship prepare cargo on deck prior to the replenishing operation (03:32). There is a good shot of a supply ship’s deck loaded with cargo boxes (04:12). Men on the supply ship check transfer equipment including pulleys and cables. The supply officer of a receiving ship completes requisition forms for the next replenishment operation (05:57). The film uses graphics to show how the ships maneuver for the replenishment operation, including the necessary distances between the two ships (06:34). A man on the supply ship fires a distance line over to receiving ship (07:54). Another illustration shows how a high line is used for transferring supplies (09:30), and the function of the housefall rig and transfer whips. Men operate winches on the delivery ship to move cargo over to the receiving ship (10:33). A winch operator uses a Burton rig to move cargo to the receiving ship (11:40). A missile is moved using the automatic shuttle system (12:35). An officer receives classified documents and signs for receipt of the documents. Men disconnect the lines at the end of the operation (14:05). The film then talks about refueling operations. A Navy fleet oiler (also known as a replenishment oiler) sails on the sea next to a receiving ship (14:54). A fuel hose is moved to the receiving ship using a spanwire. The hose is then disconnected and returned to oiler ship. The film also shows refueling operations using the close-in method (17:10). Men slide cargo boxes on rollers to organize the supplies on deck prior to a vertical replenishment transfer (replenishment by helicopter). A crew member displays the appropriate uniform used for a vertical replenishment operation (19:25). A signal officer guides the helicopter in to pick up a cargo net loaded with supplies (20:10). The film concludes with several shots of supplies being transferred from the supply ship to a receiving ship.
