I’ve been reviewing hundreds of sites after the most recent Google updates… And I noticed a trend in the sites that “make it” and the sites that don’t.

Some of us don’t notice because we’re so “in” our business instead of looking at it from a distance.

We’re going to zoom out and look at the big picture.

We aren’t going to focus on a single page… But instead, the collection of pages that form the entire website and the flow of link juice, content and ultimately, rankings.

Here we will look at 4 types of website that struggle:

1. The Pure Money Page Site
This page structure never get natural links, which means it has to manufacture all the links (and the site never becomes an authority site).

2. The Filler Page Site
The filler page is supposed to be link bait, but it’s just average content that does nothing. So the site doesn’t rank and no sales are ever made.

3. The “Almost There” Site
This happens more often than you’d think. There is AMAZING link bait on the site but absolutely no outreach has ever been done. So no links 😢

4. The Broke “Successful” Site
This is the site that has a ton of authority, traffic but because they don’t want to ‘mess things up’, they never add true money pages to the site so they don’t make any money! (And can’t afford to re-invest into the site).

So what's the solution to building and ranking a profitable website?

You got it, it's a balance between growth and profit, simple!

Here’s how I do it, I try to stay between a 1:3 to a 1:5 ratio of link bait content to money content.

So, I have 1 really good piece of link bait. (That’s where all the natural links come in)

And then I allow myself to create up to 5 pieces of content with high commercial value (money content). Reviews, high value Adsense keywords, affiliate product pages, etc.

The more successful you are with the link bait and link building, the more commercial pages you can add. (For more competitive terms, you’ll typically need more link bait so the ratio might vary)

So why follow the link bait strategy when you can build links?

Well, even if you plan on PAYING for links, sometimes high quality sites require natural content to link to.

Which means that without good link bait, you’re going to have a difficult time (even with payments) to get high quality links.

So instead the master plan to ranking is to use a combination of content types (1:3 ratio bait-to-money) and a combination of links. (natural & paid).

This usually provides me with the best rankings and, so far, has kept me pretty safe while ranking for high competition terms.
