In today’s video, we talk about the ultimate SEO checklists for 2021 that you can use for optimizing your website on Google.

Here is a breakdown of the 4 main points we will cover.

a) On-Page Checks: Making sure the things on your website are good.
b) Off-Page Checks: Backlinks & other trust signals.
c) User Experience: Things you should do for your human visitors.
d) Troubleshooting: What to check when your website won’t rank.

So let’s get started:

1) On-Page Essentials:

- Don’t copy content from other sources or website! You want Google to discover your content as soon as you publish it to avoid scrapers from stealing it.

- Aim for articles to have between 800-3000 words. Most content on the web that rank fall within this word count range.

- Ideally, include 2-8 images. Pictures & videos break up your content into manageable pieces & encourage visitors to stay on your page for longer.

- Make sure the title is relevant and interesting to encourage higher click-through rates.

- Both Google & readers search for the headline to understand the article. Keep your header simple.

- Sub-headlines help break up big blocks of content while providing additional relevance for both users and Google.

- Do not forget good spelling and grammar. Neglecting this is a sign of an untrusted website.

- Add high-quality supplementary content. Internal & external links are essential to a well-researched page. They allow users to continue their journey without going back to Google to search again.

2) Content Optimization:

- Include your keyword in the title headline along with power words to encourage clicks.

- Include your keywords in your H1 header along with a modifier (do not make it keyword specific).

- Include related keywords within your H2 sub-headlines to add additional relevance to your content.

- Include your keyword (and related keywords) within your image filenames and alt-text.

- Include your keyword within your page’s URL slug.

2a) Avoiding Content Penalties:

- Do not include ads between the H1 header and the body of text (Google doesn’t like it).

- Don’t force your audience to scroll down to begin consuming your content (keep content above the fold).

- Avoid having too many thin pages within your website (sub 450 words).

- Avoiding having excessive opt-in forms on a single page.

- Avoid copying content from other websites. It’s not nice and Google does not like it!

- Avoid having duplicate content within your own website. It wastes Google’s crawling budget.

- Avoid ads that look like they are part of the main content. Advertisements should be clearly labeled and not confused within the content.

- Keyword stuffing for the sake of ranking on Google should be avoided. It’s against Google’s guidelines.

3) Good Backlinks:

- Get links from websites within your industry (topically related backlinks).

- Get links from topically related pages.

- Get contextual backlinks (links within the main content of the page). These seem to work best.

- Get backlinks from trusted high authority website.

- Get backlinks from pages that ranking on Google and actively receiving traffic.

- Backlinks with related anchor text provides and passes more relevance which helps Google understand what your page is about.

3a) Troubleshooting Backlinks:

- Don’t repeat the same anchor text over and over again. Google sees it as unnatural.

- Don’t receive backlinks from websites hosted on shady IP addresses (i.e: 500 PBNs on one server) is something Google tries to prevent.

- Receiving hundreds of backlinks within a short period of time is usually the result of link manipulation. Avoid it!

- Avoid losing backlinks. Google has no choice but to assume you are losing links because your content holds little value or is outdated.

4) User Experience Metrics

- Have a below industry bounce rate. When your users land on your site, make sure they aren’t clicking off to search again.

- Check the 0-1 second engagement time. This tells you how many users instantly click off your website.

- Have an above average pageviews per visitor. Encourage your users to consume multiple pages on your website. This will increase the chance of them buying from you and reduce the odds of them returning to Google for another search.

- Have an above industry time on site. Typically, the longer users stay on your website, the more interesting your site is to users.

- Have above average click-through rate. Enticing titles can help increase click-through rates and improve rankings. This is one of the most important ranking factors.
