Nineveh: The City the Prophets Condemned — Confirmed in the Ground - Scriptorium
Nineveh occupied the east bank of the Tigris River opposite what is now Mosul, Iraq, spreading across two principal mounds — Kuyunjik to the north and Nebi Yunus to the south. From the late eighth through the seventh century BC it served as the political capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire under Sennacherib, Esarhaddon, and Ashurbanipal, and at its height it was the largest city in the world, ringed by twelve kilometers of walls and supplied by an aqueduct system Sennacherib engineered through the Zagros foothills.
Austen Henry Layard excavated Kuyunjik from 1845 to 1851 on behalf of the British Museum and recovered Sennacherib's Southwest Palace, including the Lachish Reliefs — alabaster carved panels depicting the 701 BC siege of Lachish, the same Assyrian campaign that 2 Kings 18 and Isaiah 36 describe in careful detail. Hormuzd Rassam, Layard's Iraqi-born colleague, returned in 1853 and uncovered Ashurbanipal's North Palace along with the royal library beneath it. R. C. Thompson continued fieldwork there between 1903 and 1932.
The Library of Ashurbanipal yielded more than thirty thousand cuneiform tablets — the largest single corpus of Mesopotamian literature ever recovered. Among them: the Gilgamesh Epic with its flood narrative closely paralleling Genesis 6–9, the Atrahasis Epic, the Enuma Elish creation account, and Sennacherib's own prism records of his campaign against Hezekiah of Judah.
The biblical footprint at Nineveh is substantial. Jonah 3:3 describes the city as an exceedingly great city, a three days' walk across. Nahum 3 and Zephaniah 2:13 announced its destruction. In 612 BC, a coalition of Medes under Cyaxares and Babylonians under Nabopolassar broke the walls and burned the palaces. Archaeologists have measured the destruction layer on Kuyunjik at roughly one meter thick.
ISIS destroyed portions of the Nebi Yunus mound and the Mashki and Adad gates in AD 2014 and 2015. The Nineveh tablets remain housed at the British Museum and the Iraq Museum in Baghdad.
