P46: The Oldest Pauline Manuscript and Its Surprising Secrets - Scriptorium

P46 — formally known as Papyrus Chester Beatty II — is the earliest substantial copy of Paul's letters in existence, dated paleographically to around AD 200. That makes it roughly a century older than any comparable Pauline manuscript, and its survival fundamentally reshapes what scholars know about how Paul's letters were collected, ordered, and transmitted in the early church.

The codex was acquired in two batches in 1930 and 1931. Alfred Chester Beatty purchased thirty leaves in Cairo; the University of Michigan acquired fifty-six more shortly afterward. Both lots almost certainly came from the same find in the Egyptian Fayum. Frederic Kenyon published the first critical edition between 1936 and 1937. Today, eighty-six of the original roughly 104 leaves survive — eleven at the University of Michigan, the rest at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin.

The surviving leaves preserve Romans, Hebrews, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Ephesians, Galatians, Philippians, Colossians, and 1 Thessalonians — in that order. Hebrews sitting directly after Romans makes P46 the earliest known witness to that arrangement, an ordering that later became standard in some Eastern manuscript traditions.

Perhaps most intriguing is what the codex appears to have omitted. Careful analysis of the page-counting strongly suggests the original codex was designed without the Pastoral Epistles — 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. This is not a matter of lost leaves; the quire mathematics indicate the codex was planned this way. It is a rare, concrete window into how the Pauline corpus was being defined in early Egypt.

The text aligns broadly with the early Alexandrian tradition represented by Codex Vaticanus and Codex Sinaiticus, with some independent readings.
