Today I am looking at the HP Envy 4520 All-in-one printer. The Envy 4520 is the successor to the extremely popular HP Envy 4500, which we had reviewed last year. And if you watched that review, you’ll know that I was extremely happy with the way that printer performed. So let’s take a closer look at the 4520, which HP incidentally sent us to review, and see how it performs.

On the outside, the Envy 4520 blends the compactness of the old 4500 with stylistic cues from its newer line of printers like the HP 5660. It’s about the same size as the 4500 and adopts a curved plastic body design. Its control panel on the front has a power button to the left, with a monochrome LCD screen in the center of the panel. The 2.2” screen has two soft keys to the left and a wireless indicator light to the right of it. The touchscreen is decent and easy to navigate- nothing extraordinary, but it works. The printer has a very low profile scan bed with a curved handle on the cover, that makes it easy to lift the cover. It has a closed paper tray which holds upto 100 sheets of paper and has a slide in document aligner for photo paper and envelopes. The printer is meant to be used as a full wireless printer, but it does have the option of being connected to a single computer using a USB cable.

In terms of initial setup, its as easy to setup as any HP printer we’ve tested recently. The process is almost unbelievably simple and the software walks you through the process step by step. If you’re using a Mac or PC, all you have to do is open up a browser window and type in: 123.hp.com. It then asks you to type in your model number, which in this case is Envy 4520. It’ll automatically put together the software bundle you need and then walk you through the setup process. If you’re setting it up through a tablet or smartphone, the best way is to use the HP AIO app, which again walks you through the installation process. Its as easy as I’ve seen the installation process get on any printer.

Once the printer is setup and ready to use, you can print, copy or scan from almost any device in the house. You can make simple black or color copies or make more sophisticated copies of documents like ID cards, or even enhance or resize documents. In terms of scanning, you can scan as either a jpg or PDF. The PDF option is extremely useful and the HP Easy Scan software is very easy to use, even when scanning multiple pages into a single PDF document. Now the print quality is somewhat average even for an inkjet printer. It’s not exceptional by any means, but is good enough for most home and home office printing jobs. And the borderless prints, especially when printing photos, are extremely useful.

When it comes to cartridges, the 4520 uses Number 63 Black and Tri-Color. The regular 63 black prints 190 pages while the regular 63 Tri-color prints 165 pages. Now you can almost double your print yield by using the XL versions of the cartridges. HP is also promoting its HP instant ink very heavily with these printers. HP instant Ink is a whole new way to think about Ink. Instead of buying cartridges, you pay for a monthly page plan. Plans range from $2.99/month for 50 pages to $9.99/month for 300 pages a month. Each time your printer begins to run low on ink, the printer automatically puts in an order for a new cartridge and HP ships a new cartridge in. Now I’ve not really had as much time to test Instant Ink in-depth, but its a pretty interesting way of thinking about cartridges and ink.
So my overall thoughts about the 4520? The Envy 4520 isn’t very remarkable in any way. And that’s not such a bad thing. Its sleek, compact, easy to setup, works every time from any device and just blends in with your decor. Is it revolutionary in any way? Not really. It’s completely unobtrusive and just does its job, each time every time. And for a home printer, that’s a great thing to have. If you’re in the market for an entry-level All-in-one, the 4520 is definitely one of the best choices on the market.
