Texto 2020 Interview Thai artisan Somporn Intaraprayong

Somporn Intaraprayong works with rare and unusual kinds of cotton, silk, linen and hemp to create clothes, bags and hangings that are carefully dyed with natural dyes and hand-stitched. Occasionally, she finds rare vintage fabric that she may dye and stitch with unusual elements. Her inspiration comes from other countries, like Japan, or from the Hill tribes or other ethnicities of Thailand, her country of origin, and always from the heart. Poverty forced Somporn to sew for the first time when she was only 13 years old: her first creation her own gym uniform. Her past motivates her to teach other women who through their work significantly improve economic conditions and educational opportunities for their families. In association with Chinalai Tribal Antiques, Ltd., Somporn designs traditional clothing and accessories whose patterns represent the daily life and iconography of Thailand. Her pieces also pay homage to the philosophy of Wabi-sabi, a Japanese world view centered around the acceptance of transience and imperfection. “Just stitch,” she tells the new seamstresses who quickly may turn into artists depicting the vast rice fields of Thailand, a funny face or a perfect spider web. Her unique style has attracted a following of collectors and connoisseurs who appreciate the wit and poetry behind every stitch.
TEXTO 2020 was our first global gathering honouring 45 heritage textile artists and creatives from 23 countries during February 2020 in Casa Pedregal, México City.
