The hippopotamus (lat. Hippopótamus amphíbius) is a cloven-hoofed mammal from the hippopotamus family, the only modern species of the genus Hippopotamus. A characteristic feature of the hippopotamus is its semi-aquatic lifestyle - it spends most of its time in the water, coming onto land only at night for a few hours to feed. The hippopotamus lives only near fresh water bodies, although it can occasionally end up in the sea.
