Piping Plover provides shelter to its baby and fake injury to draw attention of seagulls

Piping Plovers have some very interesting and unique behaviors. Some of these are how they protect their baby birds. Baby Piping Plovers can walk and find foods themselves within a few hours after hatching. However, it takes them a few weeks to learn flying, and before they can fly they are highly vulnerable to predators, such as seagulls.

During this time, parent Piping Plovers provides the best possible protections to their babies. When seagulls fly by, the parent birds often rise to attack the seagulls in order to chase the seagulls away. When seagulls land close to their baby birds, the parent Piping Plover often do some tricks to draw attention of the seagulls to themselves, such as faking injury with broken wings, also called broken wing display.

This video shows that a Piping Plover provides shelter to its baby, and fake injury to draw attention of seagulls.
