General Overview
• Morocco’s high-speed rail is managed by the ONCF (Office National des Chemins de Fer).
• The first high-speed line, Al Boraq, has been in service since November 15, 2018.
• It is the first operational high-speed rail line in Africa.

Al Boraq Details
• Route: Tangier (Tangier-Ville) ↔ Casablanca (Casa-Voyageurs), with stops in Rabat and Kenitra.
• Length: around 323–350 km, depending on whether you include both the new and upgraded sections.
• Maximum speed: 320 km/h on the dedicated Tangier–Kenitra section. From Kenitra to Casablanca, the tracks are modernized but not fully high-speed, so speeds are lower.

Current & Future Projects
• Construction is underway on the Kenitra ↔ Marrakech high-speed line, about 430 km, connecting Kenitra with Marrakech via Casablanca and Rabat, designed for speeds up to 350 km/h.
• By 2030, travel time between Tangier and Marrakech is expected to drop to around 2h40m.
• Morocco has ordered 18 Alstom Avelia Horizon trains, double-deck, with about 640 seats each, operating at ~320 km/h, financed with a French loan.
• The national plan aims to expand high-speed rail across more cities, serving a large share of the population by 2040.

Impacts & Benefits
• Connectivity: Stronger links between key cities like Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech.
• Travel efficiency: Significantly reduced travel times for tourism and business.
• Environmental impact: Electrification and green energy reduce emissions.
• Economic growth: Job creation, industrial development, and technology transfer through rail manufacturing and maintenance.
