After World War II, Germany did not immediately enter peace and recovery — it entered hunger, cold, and collapse. The winter of 1946–47 became one of the harshest in postwar Europe, as destroyed infrastructure, food shortages, and fuel scarcity pushed millions of civilians into desperation.

For the occupying Allies, this created a dangerous political problem. Many feared that if ordinary Germans were left starving and humiliated, extremism could return in a new form. That is what makes warnings like this so chilling: even after Hitler was gone, the conditions that once helped radicalism grow had not fully disappeared.
