UK Forces Seize Russian Shadow Fleet Oil Tanker

The UK Ministry of Defence announced that Royal Marine Commandos and National Crime Agency officers boarded the sanctioned Russian tanker SMYRTOS in the English Channel. The six-hour early morning operation was coordinated with the French, and the vessel was flying a Cameroonian flag at the time of the interdiction.

It was the first UK-led interdiction of a shadow fleet vessel, enabled by legislation passed in March that allows UK forces to board and seize such ships. The SMYRTOS will be moved to an anchorage off the South Coast of England and monitored for environmental or safety concerns.

Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis called the action a 'blow to Putin's illegal war.' Prime Minister Keir Starmer said it 'reminds those fueling Putin's war in Ukraine that they cannot hide.'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga welcomed the operation. Zelenskyy urged Europe to enable confiscation of the oil carried by such tankers.
