Sauron and Morgoth, the two great Dark Lords of Tolkien’s legendarium, represent different scales of power, influence, and mythic presence. Morgoth (Melkor) predated Sauron by ages and established the foundational malignancy of Middle-earth’s history, while Sauron emerged as his most enduring servant and the chief embodiment of cunning modern evil.

Legacy and reach: Morgoth’s influence ended in catastrophic catastrophe and exile; his legacy is the broken, fallen world and the despair of the Elves. Sauron’s legacy endured beyond his own fall, shaping the geopolitics of the Third Age and inspiring vast resistance. If “best” means raw might, Morgoth wins; if it means enduring, transformative evil with systemic mastery, Sauron edges ahead. Both are archetypes of ultimate corruption, each the ultimate Dark Lord in his own epoch.
