Why France Failed in the 1700s: Wars, Kings, and Empire Collapse

In the 1700s, France grappled with significant colonial challenges, particularly in India and North America, amid escalating rivalries with Britain. The French East India Company, backed by the government, held limited territory on the Indian subcontinent but wielded substantial financial influence, mirroring the British model like the Hudson's Bay Company. This era's dynamics foreshadowed major economic developments over centuries.

Under King Louis XV, who succeeded the Sun King (Louis XIV), France faced internal turmoil and financial strain from prolonged wars, including the War of Austrian Succession. Louis XV adopted an absolutist approach but relied heavily on advisors and generals, lacking the iron-fisted control of his predecessor. The monarchy's overstretched resources—exacerbated by insufficient naval power and sparse colonial populations—left French holdings vulnerable. France entered conflicts primarily to counter British naval dominance, allying with Austria and Spain against Britain and Prussia, setting the stage for the Seven Years' War.

Financial woes were acute; wars bankrupted the nation, and a proposed bond to repay a 36 million franc debt was rejected by the clergy and estates. Unlike Britain, which operated under a parliamentary system with King George II actively involved (even in battles like Dettingen), France provided minimal support to its colonies. Local forces were left to recruit natives and fend off threats independently, highlighting the monarchy's strategic shortcomings and contributing to colonial losses.

This discussion underscores how financial entanglements, weak leadership, and naval deficiencies undermined France's global ambitions, paving the way for British ascendancy.
