How We Air Travelled in 1984 Pre Covid. A Beautiful Experience It Was. Do You Remember?

Flying was thrilling back then. It felt good. Adventurous. Clean. Classy.

I made this television infomercial commercial back in 1984 for United Technologies (UTC). I talked them into this style – real people saying what they felt. I remember at this time, people were very friendly towards being filmed and saying what they thought. I called it a "real people style". We had a crew of two – me as director cameraman interviewer, and a soundman with a boom microphone. Shooting 16mm film.

At the time, all we needed was a simple release form from each person we interviewed to be able to use it on television. We decided to interview people at the newest airport in the country and back then it was Dulles Airport in Washington DC. People felt that its people mover design was the future of airports at a time when American airports were considered the best in the world

I loved flying back then and traveling the world filming all kinds of documentary stuff. On occasion, when the budget allowed, we flew first class which was just unbelievably good. Not just the food, the sleeping, but the very special service. It felt special. But actually, flying even in economy class also felt that way – special.
