Frontline travelled to Singur in West Bengal, nearly two decades after the Tata Motors small-car project that had once promised to revive the State’s industrial economy. What began in 2006 as a flagship industrial project soon turned into one of India’s most contentious land acquisition battles, reshaping the politics of West Bengal.

Through the voices of residents, farmers, and political figures associated with the movement, this Frontline Perspectives documentary revisits the Singur agitation that forced Tata Motors to shift its Nano factory to Sanand in Gujarat. The documentary explores how the movement altered the trajectory of Bengal politics, contributed to the rise of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, and left behind an abandoned factory site that still raises questions about development, land rights, and industrialisation. Nearly twenty years later, residents ask a difficult question: Did Singur lose both industry and agriculture?
