The Okhotsk Sea Coast was traditionally a Japanese activity area. Therefore it was natural for Japan to claim these areas such as Karafuto and #Chishima to be hers. Regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi made the claim clear in 1593.
However, from the beginning of the 19th Century, the Russian Empire gradually tried to deprive Japan of these areas and annexed these areas to the Empire by military forces even though the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Meiji Japanese Government, the successor of the Shogunate, severely resisted.
Japan succeeded in recovering these areas except for the northern half of Karafuto in 1905 due to her victory over the #Russo-Japanese #War. However, in 1945, #Russia(the Soviet Union) suddenly annulled the Russo-Japanese Neutral Treaty, and re-invaded the previously mentioned areas. The areas have been occupied by Russia since 1945 against
international laws.
