🎗️ Polyurethane coating may reduce breast implant complications after cancer surgery

A study of 1,455 women treated for breast cancer at 26 centres in 15 countries has found that polyurethane-coated breast implants used in reconstruction may significantly reduce complications following radiotherapy.

Researchers found capsular contracture - a painful tightening of scar tissue around an implant - occurred in 32.8% of women with coated implants compared with 47.5% with standard implants. The complication can distort breast shape and often requires further surgery.

The need for corrective operations was also markedly lower. Only 9.3% of women with polyurethane-coated implants required additional surgery, compared with 25.7% of those receiving conventional implants.

Capsular contracture is one of the most common complications in breast reconstruction after mastectomy, particularly when patients also undergo radiotherapy, which can increase inflammation and scar formation around the implant.

The polyurethane layer creates a sponge-like outer surface that integrates more closely with surrounding tissue. Researchers say this may reduce the body’s fibrotic reaction to the implant, helping prevent excessive scar tissue build-up.

The retrospective study followed patients for an average of around 2.5 to 3 years after reconstruction and radiotherapy, providing insight into longer-term outcomes for breast cancer survivors.

The findings were presented today at the European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC15) in Barcelona, where researchers said implant design could play an important role in improving reconstruction success after cancer treatment.
