Hey its Raj from 3CB.
Highly sought after Sevilla CB Jules Kounde aggravated a long-standing pelvic injury while on international duty with France and will undergo surgery.
What’s the injury?
Based on the chronic nature — this is most likely athletic pubalgia, colloquially known as a “sports hernia” and is caused by repetitive force - especially twisting - that leads to persistent groin pain.
Why does it happen?
Although we’re not exactly sure why it happens, the most commonly accepted theory is a weakened or disrupted rectus abdominus tendon to the pelvis and weakened posterior inguinal wall. This occurs due to an imbalance between stronger adductor muscles and weakened lower abdominal muscles which creates a constant shearing force and soft tissue overload.
Surgery & TImeline
There’s multiple surgical options - all of which generally involve repairing the wall weakness and cutting part of an adductor muscle to reduce tension on the area - with the most common for elite footballers ranging from a 2-4 week return timeline.
Sevilla said Kounde will be ready for next season which aligns with those timelines.
Overall outlook
The overall prognosis after these procedures is very good - nearly all footballers are able to return without any issues and show no carry-over effects.
That will be music to the ears of Sevilla who are looking to cash out on the CB and suitors - like Chelsea - who have been eye’ing the French international for years now.
I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
