Hey everyone, it’s Raj from 3CB.
Lakers guard Russell Westbrook’s main deficit is obvious - his jump shooting, particularly late in games and in the playoffs when spacing is critical and weaknesses magnified.
A fundamental problem with Westbrook’s jumper is how long the sequence is which creates room for inconsistencies and noise all along the movement chain. For Russ, that’s often inconsistent foot positioning and mechanics and a disconnect between his jump and release with the ball coming out too late - resulting in a flatter arch and/or errant misses.
During the off-season, we’ve seen multiple clips of Russ shooting and he’s attempting to address those issues.
He’s repeating the same rhythmic sequence where his feet are balanced at shoulder width and loading up on the balls of his feet to optimize calf-achilles jump mechanics (specifically, the stretch-shorten cycle aka SSC) and releasing the ball much quicker while not jumping as high.
It’s a much more balanced, compact sequence.
Harnessing mechanics and rhythm to create fluidity and synergy along the movement is what leads to an efficient, consistent jumper.
Obviously all these shots are in a closed gym so carry-over is still unknown but if Westbrook can improve his distance shooting any bit - especially his catch and shoot ability with the amount of open looks he’s going to get alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis - it will be a massive boost for this Lakers team.
