London Dungeon (Covered by The Hawkbirds)

The Hawkbirds covering the Misfits track, “London Dungeon”

Background…

The Misfits' song “London Dungeon” is a dark, haunting punk track released in 1981 on the 3 Hits From Hell EP. Inspired by singer Glenn Danzig and guitarist Bobby Steele’s real-life arrest and brief imprisonment in Brixton, England, the song channels the frustration of their confinement through powerful lyrics and the band’s signature horror-punk style. Its eerie bass line and gothic atmosphere evoke the grim conditions of incarceration. Over time, the track appeared on multiple Misfits compilations and has become a classic of the horror punk genre.

Lyrics…

🎶 They called us walking corpses,
Unholy living dead
They had to lock us up,
Put us in their British hell

Make sure your face is clean now,
Can’t have no dirty dead
All the corpses here are clean, boy,
All the Yanks in British hell

I don't want to be here in your London Dungeon
I don't want to be here in your British hell
Ain't no mystery why I'm in misery in Hell
Here's hoping you're swell

They called us walking corpses,
Unholy living dead
They had to lock us up,
Put us in their British hell

I don't want to be here in your London Dungeon
I don't want to be here in your British hell
Ain't no mystery why I'm in misery in Hell
Here's hoping you're swell

Make sure your face is clean now,
Can’t have no dirty dead
All the corpses here are clean, boy,
All the Yanks in British hell

I don't want to be here in your London Dungeon
I don't want to be here in your British hell
Ain't no mystery why I'm in misery in Hell
Here's hoping you're swell
Here's hoping you're swell
Here's hoping you're swell
Here's hoping you're swell 🎶

From the shelf…

🧸 Cute and cuddly Brown Bear got into trouble on a stormy night, while the Hawkbirds were traveling in London. He was trying to defend his girlfriend, Rose the Rabbit, who was being hassled by another man. He leapt in to defend her honor, only to be mistaken for the culprit and tossed into a gloomy, dank prison in the outskirts of the city. There, he first heard London Dungeon by the Misfits playing from a guard’s radio… its dark, moody sound spoke to his misunderstood, heroic heart. Now, safe, and back on the shelf in the Hawkbird studio, he loves when that song plays, reminding him of the night he fought for love and found punk rock.🧸 ❤️ 🐇
