GMO? Hybrid? Non-GMO? What’s the difference?

We get a lot of questions about our adorable mini watermelons, so we asked Fergus, the Produce Guy, to explain.

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. It’s when a DNA sequence from one organism is combined with another in a lab -a process that’s very rare in Australia.

Our mini watermelons, however, are the result of hybridisation. This is a natural, gradual process of breeding two plants of the same species to produce offspring that combine the best traits of both. Think orange + pomelo = tangelo!

Farmers have been using this method for centuries to grow plants that are easier to harvest, produce more fruit, and resist pests naturally.

Now that you know the difference, grab our mini organic, non-GMO watermelons, only in the Farmers Pick organic box. Plus, you get up to 12 kilos of fresh, seasonal organic produce!
