Studying the works of the Chofetz Chaim on the laws and the evils of lashon hara is widespread, and, thankfully, people nowadays are much more careful about what they speak than years ago. Tzara'as is a blessing, a direct wakeup call from G-d to stop gossiping, and we are no longer worthy of this. But our souls suffer from tzara'as when we gossip, and they are not allowed entry into the world of souls.
