Apple Watch Series 8 vs. SE 2: Five Reasons to Upgrade to the Series 8
Series 8 is great, but it’s $150 more to get features you don’t need.

Summary:
I’ve been testing out the new Apple Watch Series 8 for two months.
The Series 8 is not a huge upgrade from any of the previous models and I don’t recommend it for most people because it’s a $150 price bump from the SE 2 without substantial upgrades.
But here are the main five reasons you should consider a Series 8 over the SE 2:
#1 - Always-On Screen
The SE display turns black when it’s not in use and can be woken up with a twist of the wrist.
The Series 8 display stays on at all times.
The market loves this feature, but I keep this feature disabled. While the technology is cool, you’ll lose about six hours of battery runtime and it makes the watch a distraction.
#2 - Larger Screen Size
Apple upgraded the screen of the Series 8 from 40mm to 41mm while keeping the outer case the same as the Series 6 and SE.
This upgrade is nice to have, but it wasn't noticeable until I switched back to the SE after wearing the Series 8 for a few weeks.
The upgrade is not as substantial as the 2018 screen upgrade from 38mm to 40mm.
#3 - Better Specs
The Series 8 has six hours of battery life, the U1 chip, a third-generation heart rate sensor, and dual-band WiFi support.
These upgrades sound nice on paper, but I’d be shocked if the average user ever noticed even one of these spec increases in real life.
#4 - Extra Health Features
Series 8 has an ECG, blood oxygen and temperature reader. While these features are cool, you probably know if you need them without me telling you.
As a healthy young adult with no pre-existing conditions, the only time I use the features is when I’m testing for a review.
#5 - Premium Materials
The Apple Watch SE only comes in aluminum, while the Series 8 has a stainless steel option.
The stainless steel looks more premium, plus the glass on these models is made of sapphire, which is a huge improvement over the squishy and hollow Ion-X glass found on the aluminum models.
I used an aluminum Apple Watch for years without a problem, but if you can afford it, I highly recommend upgrading to the stainless steel.
