Summary:
Ring Pro and Nest Hello video doorbells reliably record motion and cost about the same.
Unfortunately, subscription plans are necessary for both. Nest Aware is $6/month, while Ring Protect is $3/month.
Nest’s advanced features are nice to have, but they don’t live up to the hype and aren’t worth double Ring’s subscription fee.
Does Nest Hello make sense for you? Let’s go over Nest’s four differentiating features.
#1 - Person Detection
Faces get processed in Google’s cloud to see if it's been previously seen.
The advantage? Google Home speakers can make announcements when someone it knows comes to the door. For example, “Cam is at the front door.”
The person’s name will appear on the motion notifications too.
It’s not overly useful, even when it works.
It struggles to learn faces due to a variety of circumstances (e.g., different hair styles, hats, lighting, glasses, etc.).
#2 - Package Detection
When packages are dropped in front of your door, notifications will say “Package Delivered.”
The packages must be at least 8″ x 10″ x 1″ and fully visible to the camera. You’ll probably have to optimize the position of your doorbell to get the best results. In my experience, Nest correctly identified a package 50% of the time.
#3 - Better Build Quality
Nest Hello has a sleek polycarbonate finish with a glass front, while Ring Pro has cheesy plastic faceplates.
Most people won’t care either way, but if craftsmanship is your thing, Nest Hello delivers.
#4 - 24/7 Recording Option
In my experience, Nest Hello and Ring Pro always record motion with the standard subscription plans, but you can’t rule out a missed something.
If security is a top priority, Nest Hello is your best bet. Nest is the only video doorbell with the ability to record 24/7.
For $12/month, Nest Aware Plus records continuously. You can scrub through 10 days of footage to find the footage needed.
