Hardware
The SE’s screen is similar to the Series 6, but the SE’s screen turns black when not in use. Just tap on the SE screen to make it illuminate.

The Series 6 screen has an “always-on” display, which dims when not in use but bright enough to view basic functions (time, etc). The always-lit display is convenient for exercising. However, the added feature does drain the battery. It reduces battery runtime by about six hours per charge cycle.

Actually, I may just disable the always-on option to save battery and enable it when I’m exercising...

The Apple Watch SE performs much like the Series 6. I wouldn’t notice too many differences in the two watches if I was not so familiar with the technology and all iterations of the Apple Watch.

The SE averaged 35 hours of runtime, and the processor uses the same S5 chip present in the Series 5.

Even with my experienced Apple eye, I can’t tell the difference from the Apple SE’s speed as compared to the Series 5 and 6.

On paper, the Series 6 is faster than the SE but it’s not noticeable in actuality. The Series 6 has three hardware differences (U1 chip, 5Ghz compatibility, and third-generation heart rate sensor) but none of these will affect you much in day-to-day tasks.

The Series 6 averaged 37 hours of runtime with always-on disabled and 30 hours with it enabled. The Series 6 has a faster recharging time. It goes from 0 to 80% in an hour while the SE gets to about 65% in that time.

The Series 6 S6 chip is up-to 20% faster than the SE’s S5 chip, yet there is no noticeable difference aside from battery life.

Apple hasn’t fully revealed plans for its U1 chip but it could help locate Apple AirTags, unlock a car with Apple’s Car Key, and introduce incredible integrations with the HomePod mini (Your music “follows” you as you walk throughout the home.)

Features
The Apple Watch SE comes with a compass, always-on altimeter, fall detection, an option to add a cellular plan, and family setup.

The Series 6 offers two features not found in the SE; it has an ECG reader on the Digital Crown along with a blood-oxygen reader that works via LED lights. Both features are incredible for those who have particular health concerns or those who are active climbers.

Design
The Apple Watch SE comes in three aluminum case shades: space grey, silver, and gold. You’ll coordinate with any outfit given the 29 separate band options. In all, that’s 87 different style options!

I was captivated by the blue aluminum versus my usual stainless steel band. However, I conclude the aluminum models lack that premium feel provided by the stainless steel.

The Apple Watch Series 6 has five aluminum colors (including a blue and red that isn’t offered with the SE). It’s the only Apple Watch model that is sold in titanium and stainless steel. So, it may be the better choice for those who are more concerned with wearing the watch for vanity.

The stainless steel is much more scratch-resistant and the sapphire glass is what truly separates the finish from aluminum models.

So, what’s my final say on the Apple Watch SE vs. Series 6?
