The SLICK-A-DIDDLE Linear Pocket Chop – Drum Lesson By Nick Bukey

In this lesson you will learn to play a lick that I stumbled upon accidentally while practicing. I found that I commonly used many of the smaller phrases within this fill/groove on a regular basis when improvising, so I arranged them in to a sequence and created the ‘Slick-a-diddle’.

Once again, the 2 and 4 are accented on the snare giving this groove/chop/fill a strong backbeat (hence the name pocket chop). I break the ‘Slick-a-diddle down into two parts and slow them down to show the exact sticking and orchestration. The smaller phrases within the pattern also make very tasty and slick fills as well. When practicing this chop, be mindful of the sound levels, stick heights and the dynamics you are using. This is what gives the chop feel, groove and character.

I hope you enjoy practicing this pattern and get to a place where you are able to combine all the smaller phrases into one fluid groove. After enough time is spent practicing these ideas, you should hopefully be able to generate your own creative chops in real-time while you are improvising.
