Improvising – How I Practise Chopping Out – Advanced Drum Lesson by Nick Bukey

In this lesson you will see one of a few methods that I use and recommend to my students to help develop flow whilst improvising.

The big topic for this lesson is improvising and in particular, learning to shred or chop out. I’ve had many students ask me about this and it seems to be one of the more popular sections from my online courses so I’m going to share a few thoughts and show you one of a few methods that have worked for me. To be honest, I’m not really a natural player and improviser. I kind of am now but I wasn’t in my earlier years. I always struggled with this and found it difficult to link my ideas together. I found that I needed to learn lots of patterns and vocabulary and systematically practise combining these ideas together in order to play a decent drum solo or just be free to improvise on the kit.

Here is a simple exercise that I get my students to do to help them put their ideas together. This lesson is aimed at people who have already developed a bit of a vocabulary in hand and foot combinations and linear phrasing. I’m going to put on a slow metronome, slow is very important so you have time to think and put your ideas together. And I’m going to start improvising with my chosen note value (sextuplets in this case) and keep it simple using some of the vocabulary from the Phrase Banks and Exercises in my online courses, books and a few random ideas that pop into my mind. I like to do this for 10-15 at a time or until I get bored or as long as I can before I start to run out of ideas. It’s quite difficult to keep good time at slow tempos so this is great for your precision and control as well. Here are a few clips of me keeping it simple and slow and demonstrating how I practise combining different phrases and patterns together. Try this for yourself and let me know how you go in the comments section. Lets start with some slow improvising now.
